14-How Transformers Work

For Mon Oct 27th, read Empires of Light, pp.  117-139 (George Westinghouse).  Review pp. 123 and 130-132 especially carefully and then post an account (before class) of how transformers work.  During class you will use the blog’s comment function to vote on:  1) which account is the most technically correct and comprehensive; 2) which account is the most accessible and understandable to non-engineers; and 3) which account is the best mix of the two. 

For Mon Nov 3rd, you will write a 4 page (typed and double spaced) account of how transformers work.  You will discuss Faraday’s contribution, explain why transformers work only with AC current, indicate Westinghouse’s contribution to transformer design, and explain why transformers are so important for long distance power generation.
