Introductions- June Sri

September 17, 2008

My name is Sureeporn Srikasem, but you can called me “June”. This is my second year in the United States, which I moved to from Thailand. In my junior year, I was in Houston, TX as a foreign exchange student with the American Field Service (AFS) intercultural program. In my senior year, I moved to Arlington, VA because my stepdad came here for work.

I am an electrical engineering major. I am interested in becoming an electrical engineer because of my real dad. He was an electrical engineering professor in Thailand and always brought home things that his students built for me to play with. I had fun with playing these things, but I wasn’t really interested in becoming an engineer until I broke his student’s soccer robot. It looked like a small square car that I could sit in, drive it around, and use a control button to pick the ball up. So I tried it and the robot crashed into the fence and broke into small pieces. My father picked the pieces up and fixed the robot. It surprised me that he could fix something that I think would have ended up in the garbage. He showed me that knowledge from the book is something to be applied. Since I love Physics and Mathematics so much. Becoming an engineer is a great path for me to apply what I love to real life.

Introduction – Kolyo T.D.

September 2, 2008

Hi my name is Kolyo Dimanov and I want to be an Engineer because both of my parents have masters degrees in engineering my father is an aerodynamics and aerospace engineer and my mother is an food industry engineer. I have always wanted to be an engineer because I was always interested in making things work. When I was 5 years old I received my first LEGO set and I would spend countless hours paying with the Lego’s and trying to build stuff that looked cool. It was very fun and entertaining to build different space ships and airplanes, but the greatest satisfaction was received when I would finish a project and then show my dad what I have made. It gave me a feeling of achievement and satisfaction because even if the thing that I made was not exactly perfect my dad would always say that I did a great job. I believe that Engineering is about team work and I am really looking forward to learning how to be an engineer.

My name is Ryan, and I am majoring in civil engineering. I decided early on in my childhood that I didn’t want to be a policeman or a fireman or a doctor like every other kid; I wanted to fix, build and design things. Throughout my childhood and adolescent years, I was always fascinated by the concept of ‘why’.
“Why do I have to do that?”
“Why can’t I do this instead?”
“Why does this work?”
I did not realize it at the time, but I was forming an essential engineering skill: out-of-the-box thinking.

Later on in my educational career, I started to narrow down what kinds of things I wanted to tinker with. I had always enjoyed architecture and colossal structures such as bridges and skyscrapers, and after taking two years of shop and two years of physics, I knew that I wanted to work with statics. Thus, the civil engineering major.

Hello English 101 class, my name is Robert Schwing, I am 18 years old, and I am a Computer Science major.  Before I came to George Mason, I lived in Ashburn, Virginia. I first became interested in the field of engineering because my sister chose Environmental Engineering as her major. I have chosen to major in Computer Science because I did very well in a Computer Science class in High School. However, I am not completely sure what kind of Engineer I want to be. My hope is that by taking this class I will be able to get more information on other kinds of engineering. Using this information I will decide on whether to keep my major as Computer Science or to change it to another type of Engineering.

August 25, 2008

My Name is Keith F, I’m 18 attending GMU and have a passion for Electrical Engineering. In fact, I’ve wanted to earn a degree in EE since I was very young even younger then I can remember. My first memories of electronics was disassembling all of my gifts to look at the guts, trying to improve or even build a new toy that never exactly worked out.
As I gained more experience I developed a fondness for vintage and antique electronics. My first creations that actually worked were Vacuum Tube based amplifiers that I had built because contemporary commercially built models are too expensive.  In the future and with a degree from George Mason I hope to apply my knowledge to make good sounding amplifiers a commercially viable option for the general public.

I’m interested in engineering because I’ve always been good in math and science. I like working with computers and I’m pretty good with them hence why I chose computer engineering as my major. My father was a systems engineer and he’s shown me a lot of what engineering has to do with so I because interested early on. When I was in junior high I learned how to program basic programs and games, though now I don’t really remember most of it. In high shool I took a computer systems class freshman year and then a webpage development class sophomore year, so I already know a bit about computers. I’m mostly in this field for the money, but knowing what I’m doing helps that much more.

Hello class, my name is Michael Williams and I am currently perusing a major Civil and Infrastructure Engineering.  This is my declared major for many reasons which all correspond to my interests and my personality. I have been interested in the engineering field for many years. I have always had the ability to visualize thing and then actually build them. About five years ago my uncle persuaded me to take a look at some of the work he had been doing for Sunoco Oil Inc. in Brazil. After reviewing his work I asked him to actually sit down and talk to me about his job and it was really inspiring. His job allowed him to travel all around the work and work in many different countries. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to intern with him for a summer due to a scheduling conflict and the long ours he was working at the job site. However, that didn’t stop me from researching the actual job expectations of a Civil Engineer on the websites of several major companies in the world. I looked at all the jobs that a civil engineer might do in the companies, and I was surprised to see that I was already interested in most of these projects. Ever since that moment I have been doing all that I can to receive a degree in Civil Engineering.

Introduction – Wesley C

August 25, 2008

My name is Wesley Chin. I am possibly the only Oriental student in this class, and thus am the proudest of my Asian heritage despite the fact that I’ve grown up in the Metropolitan Area for most of my life.  Although I’m a scrawny little Asian kid, I enjoy playing and watching basketball.

The satisfaction that comes with watching one’s invention perform to and beyond expectations is the most important factor in my choosing engineering as my major; more specifically, computer engineering. Programming software has interested me since I was a little boy watching my older brother program Connect Four with NBA Western and Eastern Conference tiles.

Since the beginning of highschool I have been interested in the field of engineering. My freshman year I took a computer programming class and started to research into the world of engineering more deeply. Throughout the rest of my years in highschool I furthered my knowledge of the field by taking more classes on the subject and participating in extra-carricular activities that relate to computer engineering. I decided, in my junior year, that I would attend college and major in computer engineering. The techinical aspect of engineering is what drew me towards it and coincidentally engineers make a pretty substantial salary so from then on i have been set on Computer Engineering.

Intro Will

August 25, 2008

My name is William Foreman but everyone that I interact with call me Will. No just because my last name is Foreman, does not mean I am related to George Foreman. Although if I was I would be rich. I am from Chesapeake, Virginia and I graduated from Oscar Frommel Smith High School. I live three hours away from George Mason but I saw this opportunity as an exceptional way of meeting new people and learning in a healthy environment.

I intend on majoring in Civil and Infrastructure Engineering. I was immediately interested in Civil and Infrastructure Engineering because designing systems and construction is exciting to me. I also wanted to connect with other parts of the world and make it a better place to live. By doing this major I can do what I want and develop communication skills. My biggest goal for the future is to be able to start and own my own Engineering Firm.
